Course 6200 Manuals

The manuals listed in the table below for the Get Ready for Open Source: SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop (Book 1)  course (6200) include both an Instructor Guide and the Student Workbook: 

The Instructor Guide contains setup instructions, answers to questions in the workbook, and references to additional materials to help you add value to the classroom experience.  The Student Workbook contains all the instructions and exercises students need to successfully complete the course.

What if I don't see the student workbook or cover in my browser? When you click the PDF link for the student workbook or cover, some browsers give you a choice to view or download the file. Other browsers immediately attempt to display the workbook or cover in the browser. Because of the size of the workbook (14 MB) or cover (8 MB), it can take several moments for the file to display in your web browser. If you would like to download the workbook or cover, instead of viewing it, right-click the PDF link and select the appropriate option for saving the target or link.

Course 6200 Media

For students to complete the "hands-on" exercises in the Get Ready for Open Source: SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop (Book 1) student workbook, you will need to download the following Course CD and SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop installation DVD:

Each student in the class will need a 6200 Course CD (which contains exercise files) and a SLED 10 DVD (for installing SLED 10).  Once you download the .iso files, you'll need a DVD-RW drive and a blank CD/DVD media to create the CD and the DVD (see Creating a DVD or CD from an .iso File below).

While the 6200 Course CD is relatively small, the SLED 10 DVD is almost 3 GB in size. For that reason, selecting the ISO file link takes you directly to our download.novell.com site, which is specifically designed to handle downloading larger files.  You are directed the SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 download page.  From the download page,

1. Log in. From the top of the list of files, select the -> proceed to download button. A Novell Login page appears.
   
   A Novell Login Account gives you the ability to access all of the secure Novell web sites to which you have rights (including downloadable files) with a single user ID and password. It can also save you time by simply accessing your login account information to fill in several fields on a required survey form.
   
   Create a Novell Login account, or, if you already have an account, log in with your Username and Password; then select Login. The same list of files appears with a link for downloading each file.
2. Download the SLED 10 installation DVD. From the list of downloadable files, select the -> download button for the SLED-10-x86-DVD1.iso file.

Because the file is large, downloading can take a long time (depending on your available Internect connection).  Although it is possible to use Internet Explorer 6 or later to download the file, there are reported problems with using IE to download larger files.  Instead, we recommend using a later version of Firefox (with its download manager) to download the file.

Creating a DVD or CD from a .iso File

Many Novell training courses require that you have a course DVD or set of CDs for students to complete the workbook exercises. For example, Course 6200 requires that students have a 6200 Course CD and a SLED 10 DVD available.

When you download the DVDs or CDs, you normally download the DVD or CD as a .iso file. An .iso file is an exact image of the original DVD or CD that you can use with a DVD or CD drive that burns (writes) to a blank DVD or CD disk. However, burning the .iso file directly to a blank disk does not create a duplicate of the DVD or CD image. You need to have software installed on your computer that can take the .iso file, interpret the contents, and then burn the image on a blank disk.

For example, Windows XP includes software that can take a .iso file and burn a CD or DVD for you. The software usually launches automatically when you insert a blank DVD or CD disk. You can also right-click the .iso file and select Open to access the correct software for burning the .iso file on a DVD or CD disk.
