Setting Up the Practice Environment

The exercises for Modules 2 through 10 of the Bridging NetWare Skills to Novell Open Enterprise Server for Linux require that you install Novell Open Enterprise Server (OES) on a computer you have available to dedicate to performing the exercises.

You can download the installation CDs for OES SP2 from the Novell Open Enterprise Server SP2 EVAL download Web site.

To download the files you need, do the following:

  1. Start from the Novell Open Enterprise Server SP2 EVAL download web page. To download the files that you need to install Novell OES, you need to start from the Novell Open Enterprise Server SP2 EVAL download Web site; then from the top of the listed files, select the -> proceed to download button. A Novell Login page appears.

  2. Log in using your Novell Login Account. From the Novell Login page, enter the username and password for your Novell Login Account and select Login.

A Novell Login Account gives you the ability to access all of the secure Novell web sites to which you have rights (including downloadable files) with a single user ID and password. If you do not have an account, select the Create Account button, follow the instructions for creating an account (it only takes a few mintes), and then return to the Novell Login page to continue.

Once you create a Novell Login Account, you can use the account username and password to download files for Bridging NetWare Skills and other courses listed on the Novell OpenCourseWare web site.
  3. From the list of downloadable files, select the -> download button for the file you want to download.

Because you only need to complete a basic installation of Novell OES, download the following files:

  • oessp2linux01.iso
  • oessp2linux02.iso
  • oessp2linux03.iso
  • oessp2linux04.iso

As these are .iso files (for creating CDs), downloading each file can take from 10 - 20 minutes (depending on the size of the file and the speed of your Internect connection). Once you download the .iso files, you'll need a CD-RW drive and a blank CD disk to create a CD from the .iso file (see Creating a CD or DVD from a .iso File).

After creating the Novell OES installation CDs, insert CD 1 in the computer, reboot the computer, and follow the prompts to install Novell OES, using the default settings. For steps on installing Novell OES, see the installation instructions in the Lab Guide for OES Linux.

Warning! Remember that you are installing a new operating system, which will replace your current operating system on the computer, along with any files on the computer. Make sure you back up any important files before you start the installation.

Creating a CD or DVD from a .iso File

Many Novell training courses require that you have a set of CDs and DVDs to set up and complete the available exercises. For example, the Bridging NetWare Skills course requires that you have 4 CDs.

When you download the CDs or DVDs, you normally download the CD or DVD as a .iso file. An .iso file is an exact image of the original CD or DVD that you can use with a CD or DVD drive that burns (writes) to a blank CD or DVD disk. However, burning the .iso file directly to a blank disk does not create a duplicate of the CD or DVD image. You need to have software installed on your computer that can take the .iso file, interpret the contents, and then burn the image on a blank disk.

For example, Windows XP includes software that can take a .iso file and burn a CD or DVD for you. The software usually launches automatically when you insert a blank CD or DVD disk. You can also right-click the .iso file and select Open to access the correct software for burning the .iso file on a CD or DVD disk.
